Volunteer Nepal Kathmandu Review Luther Sentz Orphanage program

This trip to Nepal has been incredible! Every part of the program has far exceeded my expectations. Some of my favorite memories have been the trip I have taken each weekend to nearby cities and towns.

How was the local Coordinator and the staff and the support provided in-country?

He is excellent coordinator and provided me with much support while I was in Nepal. Every time I planned a trip somewhere they always went over the plans with me and made sure I knew I was doing and where I was going. He is also so kind and feel more like friend than staff member.

What was the most surprising thing you experienced while in the program?

The most surprising thing I experienced while in the program was how much freedom I had. I was able to set my own times at the orphanage and was able to change it whenever I wanted to go on a trip.

What was most difficult thing you experienced while in the program?

The most difficult thing I experienced during the program was trying to figure out the local transportation. The buses they have in Nepal are kind of confusing for foreigners. But Sudhir always helped get on the correct one or would help me call a taxi!

Any tips for future volunteers….

I stayed in Nepal during the summer and wore a t-shirt and shorts every day. It rained at least once a day so make sure to have a really nice rain coat. I wish I has brought a pair of sandals because you are constantly taking your shoes off when you go in and out of rooms.

Other things volunteers should know:

Chitwan : Many types of safaris to go on.

Pokhara : Very touristy with lots of things to do and you should probably spend a whole weekend here.

Paragliding – Sarangkot sunrise hike – phewa lake – peace pagoda temple and other temples.

Kathmandu : Thamel – Very touristy part of the city and a place where you can make friends with other foreigner. Nagarkot hike. Everest mountain flight.

Personal paragraph (volunteer program testimonial):

During the weekdays I would work in the orphanage in the afternoon when the kids would come home from school. Most of my time there consisted of helping the kids with their homework and then playing games afterwards. The kids are incredibly nice and really try to get to know the volunteers and are always eager to be with us.

How would you describe your accommodation, meals, security?

We have the entire upper floor of the home which consists of a large porch-like sitting room and full bathroom. The rooms are very nice with good beds and dressers. The meals are delicious Nepali curry for dinner and eggs and toast for breakfast. And we have wi-fi which is awesome! I have not once felt in danger in the home stay.

How was the information you received from ABV prior to traveling? (Emails, website, support) was there anything missing or should be included to prepare other volunteers?

The PDF orientation packet that ABV sends you once you sign-up for the program is full of great information. They send you details for picking you up when you arrive and as soon as I walked out of the airport Sudhir came up to me and found me.

Are you willing to speak to other potential ABV volunteers about your volunteer experience?

Yes! You can email me at anytime!
